What procedures does a cross-border worker working in Belgium need to follow?

The basic rule:

The country where you work is your reference country in terms of social security because contributions are usually (but not always!) deducted there directly from your salary.

You therefore have to register with a Belgian mutual insurance company.

What is a mutual insurance company in Belgium?

In Belgium, the mutual insurance company is the reference organisation for all the healthcare aspects of social security (reimbursement of healthcare, payment of benefits in the event of incapacity for work, etc.). It is up to you to follow the procedures to register and not up to your employer, as is sometimes the case in certain countries.

  1. Register with a Belgian mutual insurance company. To do this, ask us to contact you by filling in the form on this page.
  2. As soon as you register, the mutual insurance company will provide you with a document S1 confirming your status as a cross-border worker.
  3. Submit this document S1 to the social security organisation in your country of residence to receive reimbursement for your healthcare in this country as well.

Special circumstance:

If you live in Luxembourg, document S1 is replaced by document BL1.
